Richmond was centre stage to the world as the Venue City for long track speed skating events during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. For the 17 days of the Games, the iconic Richmond Olympic Oval and Richmond’s Official celebration site, O Zone, played host to 12 medal events.

The Richmond Olympic Oval is just a few minutes from the Aberdeen or Richmond-Brighouse stations off the brand new Canada Line rapid transit system, which links YVR airport with Richmond and downtown Vancouver. This easy-access transit system allows visitor to get to Richmond with ease and frequency.

Arrival Day 5:00 PM

7:30 PM

The party may be over, but the legacy lives on at the Richmond Olympic Oval. A stunning example of West Coast architecture and sustainability, the building is now home to the community offering everyone the opportunity to play, skate, and even paddle inside. Walking tours of the structure are available, providing details about the construction and architecture of the building, sustainability features, operations and public art. An Olympic memorabilia portion will be added in July, highlighting artifacts, stories and other visuals from the Games.

DAY 2. 11:00 AM

Explore the city’s famed levees and dykes that create endless seaside trails for a walk, stroll, or jog. Strategically placed benches en route make it the perfect spot for taking in scenic views of the wildlife-rich Fraser River. You could also spend an afternoon in one of Richmond’s many parks and recreational areas.

Richmond boasts over 90 parks and more than 80 kilometres (50 miles) of interconnecting trails, leading you to nature and heritage-based points of interest. And our mild climate means you can get outside year ‘round for pitch and putt, picnicking, and more. Cyclists in the spring and summer will find heaven on these trails.

4:00 PM

Put yourself in a Zen state of mind at the Buddhist Kuan Yin Temple. This is the second largest Buddhist Temple in North America and a lovely example of Chinese palatial architecture. Explore its enchanting gardens, inspiring sculptures, and dramatic statues. Introduce yourself to Buddhism through many forms, including Chinese art, painting, meditation, traditional ceremonies, events, and customs.

9:00 PM

See if luck is your lady at the River Rock Casino Resort, Western Canada’s largest casino that overlooks the banks of the Fraser River. If gaming isn’t your forte, the River Rock Casino Show Theatre is where you’ll find a dazzling line up of world-class entertainers, comedians, celebrity concerts, plays, and dinner theatre. Or you can take in a live, professional, on-stage production at the Gateway Theatre, which boasts award-winning work from Canadian playwrights and writers of diverse cultures.

DAY 3. 10:00 AM

After some breakfast at one of the many cafés in the neighborhood, you can take in the picturesque Historic Fishing Village of Steveston. This scenic village is where the mighty Fraser River and the Pacific Ocean meet – a lively destination for shopping, dining, and exploring that was settled when the first cannery opened in the 1800s.

Today, it’s a thriving home to the largest commercial fishing fleet in Canada and two National Historic Sites. It’s a family-friendly neighborhood filled with a casual atmosphere and a welcoming attitude. From June to October, you can venture out into the Gulf Islands for some jaw-dropping whale-watching tours with Vancouver Whale Watching or Steveston Sea Breeze Adventures that will get you up close and personal to orcas, porpoises, sea lions, seals, and bald eagles.

1:00 PM

After a thrilling adventure on the water and lunch on the dockside, it’s time to get historic and connect with the past. This attraction is seasonal so check the website, but if you are here before October 12th or during Games Time, you can explore the Gulf of Georgia Cannery NHS. Situated atop wooden pilings over the Fraser River this National Historic Site is one of the few remaining 19th-century salmon canneries on the BC coast. It commemorates the development of Canada’s West Coast fishing industry from the 1870s to present. At its peak at the turn of the century, canned salmon from Richmond was shipped around the world by the millions.

Next up is Britannia Shipyard NHS (self-guided and open weekends October 1 – April 30), a rare surviving example of a once thriving mixture of canneries, boatyards, and residences. In 1992 this eight-acre site was designated a National Historic Site with some of the oldest remaining heritage buildings found along the Fraser River.

Many of the buildings at Britannia date back to 1885 and tell the stories of multi-ethnic residents and workers: Chinese, European, First Nations, and Japanese. This season Britannia is showcasing a new exhibit called “How We Lived,” A a restoration of five extraordinary stilt houses to period themes.

2:00PM

After checking Britannia, journey to the past with a visit to London Heritage Farm (Open weekends September to December including Fridays in November and December, See website for full operating hours.). Tours of this beautifully restored 1860s farmhouse come complete with afternoon tea and a tour of the home and gardens.

3:30 PM

After a walk down memory lane, maybe the late afternoon is a time of indulgence for total fun and relaxation. The bottom line, there are plenty of activities to be had here. From the thrill of indoor go-carting to bowling fun at the Zone Bowling Centre and even the indoor wave pool at Watermania.
